Winter skin care 

Cold weather didn’t slowly creep up on us, but blew in overnight. And just like it usually does, it’ll dissipate for a short period too, allowing our irritated winter skin to go into complete shock over the finicky temperatures. While normally we’d recommend a strong offense, there’s only so many preventative steps you can take with unpredictable weather. Instead, get into defensive mode by responding to common issues like dryness, redness, and itchy skin as they appear. We caught up with Indie Lee, a skin care expert and the CEO and founder of her eponymous skincare line, to discuss natural remedies you can count on to get the job done.

1: Squalane
Function: This natural oil, derived from olives, is perfect for treating dry skin. “The colorless, odorless moisturizer resembles the molecular structure of our own skin’s design, allowing it to completely penetrate and synthesize at a much faster rate than any artificially produced substance would,” says Lee. It works well with any skin type to improve sebum balance as well as elasticity. As a result, it heals cracked and chapped skin.
Application: Lee recommends applying it twice daily directly to the skin as a facial or body moisturizer.

2: Calendula Oil
Function: “It’s known as the almighty soother, helping to treat everything from chapped skin to burns, cuts, rashes, and bug bites,” Lee says. Translation: This one belongs in the house year round. Derived from the calendula flower, “it works to increase elasticity, which in turn reduces dark circles and other under-the-eye irritation.”
Application: Create a balm by heating three drops of the oil with one tablespoon of coconut oil. Let the mixture cool in an air-tight glass jar, then apply to the under eye.

3: Rosehip Seed Oil
Function: Extracted from the seeds of a wild rose bush, the oil is an anti-inflammatory that works to even out the skin tone and eliminate redness and rosacea.
Application: “Use as a moisturizer by mixing three drops of rosehip oil with a tablespoon of jojoba oil, then massage into the face and neck,” Lee advises.

4: Chamomile Tea/Green Tea
Function: Both teas are essential for treating wind-burned skin and eczema because they soothe redness and irritation, says Lee.
Application: She recommends using them as a facial toner to calm pores. Her recipe: “Pour one cup of hot water over a tea bag and then secure with a tight lid. Once cool, strain the mixture through a coffee filter before applying to skin as a toner.”

5: Yogurt
Function: “Yogurt is a mild lactic acid and has key antibacterial properties,” Lee says. She recommends the beloved breakfast food for healing dry, itchy skin as well as soothing rashes.
Application: Apply as a face mask to clear clogged pores and soothe any skin irritation. After 10 minutes, remove with a warm, damp washcloth.

6: Manuka Honey
Function: This all-natural honey soothes and hydrates. “The vitamins, enzymes and minerals found in the honey are known to improve the skin’s texture and its vitality while also containing natural antibacterial properties,” Lee explains. For optimal benefits, she recommends purchasing a 100% raw Manuka honey with a bio active 12+ or above. “This strength,” she says, “relates to its antibacterial effects, [which] means the honey is closer to its natural state.”
Application: For a 5-10 minute facial, Lee recommends blending honey with one part milk and coating the entire face.

7: Carrot Juice
Function: Because it’s high in vitamin A and potassium, the juice will diminish any puffiness in the skin as well as reduce blemish spots and scars.
Application: “Use twice daily as a skin tonic, mixing one part carrot juice with three parts water,” Lee says.
